A TRUCK carrying furniture northbound on the Pacific Highway ran off the road south of Woodburn just after 5.30am this morning.

In one of the deadliest stretches of the Pacific Highway a small pantech truck cut a swathe of about 60 metres through thick scrub when it ran off the road two kilometres south of the village of Woodburn.

The driver managed to get out of the damaged vehicle but the passenger was trapped for about 45 minutes while emergency services cleared away shrubs and trees to get to the man.

"We then used the jaws-of-life to help release him from the truck," Woodburn SES local controller Jim McCormack said.

The man was then taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital with leg injuries.

Ballina police confirmed that the Crash Investigation Unit was looking into the cause of the accident.
