Drainage paves way for housing

TWEED Shire Council will carry out $4million worth of drainage work in West Kingscliff over the next six months.

The work, enhancing existing drainage under Blue Jay Circuit and Quail Place near Lorien Way, will triple the drainage capacity of the system by installing a pipe with a diameter of 2.25m, replacing a system that ranged from 1.2m to 1.35m in diameter.

The upgrade will improve stormwater drainage and facilitate housing development in the Kingscliff and west Kingscliff area.

Project manager and council senior construction engineer Nigel Dobson said the council would run two crews to complete the project as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimise disruption to residents.

"Council is highly conscious of the disruption that could be caused to neighbouring residents and is taking all reasonable steps to minimise this," Mr Dobson said.

"We will be doorknocking affected residences to explain the project and give residents the opportunity to ask any questions they may have.

"It is estimated that crews will only be able to install an average of two pipes per day because of the size of the pipes, the number of existing services that need to be modified and the depth of excavation, all within a constricted corridor."

Mr Dobson said construction would take up to 26 weeks and would be staggered to minimise the impact to residents on each section of the route.
