Dragon boats splash out to help fight for sick children

THE Tweed community will be splashing out to help children on November 18 when about 40 dragon boat teams take to the water for the 30th annual Kids in Need Dragon Boat Festival.

This year the festival at Jack Evans Boat Harbour will feature a party theme and organisers will use the anniversary to give thanks to the community for all its support over the years.

The event raises funds for disabled and seriously ill children, helping their families cover medical costs.

Kids in Need Vice President Sandy Rogers said that the charity has been hosting the dragon boat based festival for 26 of its 30 years.

"We've just accomplished so much… supporting families in the community who may otherwise not be able to afford the specialised equipment or medical treatment." said Ms Rogers.

Last year the festival raised about $20,000, which was used to support requests such as wheel chair modification and cost gaps for major operations.

Events director for Queensland Dragon Boating Norm Hunt said that there would be around 40 teams in attendance made up from local businesses, schools and dragon boat clubs.

"It's just a fun way of raising money for kids in our area," said Mr Hunt.
