Dragon boaters off to Hong Kong
THE grand masters at Coolangatta/Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club have earned an invitation to the World Club Crew Championships in Hong Kong but only a few will be making the trip.
For the first time the grand master mixed and grand master won the Queensland championships.
The mixed team then went on to win the Australian championships at Docklands earlier this year, earning a place to contest the world champion race.
Team manager Michael Davies said the team was not going because not everyone could make the race, but individuals were going to help race with other teams that had qualified.
"We haven't even placed in the Queensland competition before, not even a medal," Mr Davies said.
"The crew decided to put their hand up and go for it this year."
Not only did they put their hands up, they put them out in front to win the championships.
"We really surprised ourselves but there would be a bit of competition up there at the world club crew championships," he said.
"We came away with a couple of our goals achieved this year."
Mr Davies said the world club championships might be a goal next year.
The 8th Club Crew World Dragon Boat Championships is on in Hong Kong between July 4-8.
