Dont give pets as gifts

NORTHERN Rivers Animal Services (NRAS) is urging locals to not give animals as gifts this festive season.

Volunteer Michela Brown said "the recipient may not be willing to spend 10-20 years providing food and vet treatment, as well as boarding kennel costs" for the animal.

Also, now is the peak cat breeding season and NRAS urges cat owners to ensure their felines are desexed before they reach five months of age.

In the past two weeks the group has received two unwanted litters of kittens dumped by irresponsible humans - on top of the two litters born in care from unwanted female cats.

NRAS formed in 2001 in response to the need for the rescue and rehousing of unwanted, abused and abandoned companion animals.

"While cats, dogs, kittens and puppies are our main focus, we have also rehoused rabbits and ferrets," Michela said.

NRAS is holding a cat and kitten adoption day on Saturday, December 15, from noon-2pm at 25a Racecourse Rd, Ballina.

Contact NRAS for more information on 6681 1860, or email nras@live.com.au.

NRAS operates two op shops to help fund their work - one in North Lismore and the other in River St, Ballina. Donations of saleable items are welcome.
