UNLESS you want a loving friend for life, don't buy a pet for Christmas - and definitely don't get one as a gift for someone else.

Bundaberg RSPCA shelter manager Vicki Beer says that taking on a pet is not something to be done lightly.

"Choosing a pet is a very personal decision and a big responsibility," she said.

"The only time you should buy a pet for someone else is if they have already picked it out and you are just paying for it."

But for people who have carefully considered the idea of bringing a new addition into their home, the Christmas holidays can be a wonderful time to welcome a new friend who will spend the coming years enjoying the festive season with you.

"At Christmas time people have more time at home to spend with their new pet," Ms Beer said.

"And if there are kids at home, it gives them time to get used to the animal."

Unfortunately some animals will spend their Christmas at the RSPCA and donations are always welcome.
