De-finned shark washed up at Ballina

REMAINS of an unidentified de-finned and decapitated shark have washed up on South Ballina beach this morning, reigniting calls for a crackdown on the shark fin trade.

The discovery follows a similar incident at Evans Head in August last year in which a grey nurse shark was found with both fins sliced off.

Australian Anti-Shark Finning Alliance director Mick Dowers said the image revealed mutilation consistent with the harvest of shark fins.

"The animal's tail and was clearly sliced off with a knife... and its head removed for its jaws and teeth," Mr Dowers said.

Suffolk Park shark conservationist Madison Stewart said shark-finning incidents were disturbingly regular on the North Coast, with several mutilated sharks washed up in the last two months alone.
