TWEED firefighters were kept busy Sunday morning with several fires lit around Tweed Heads West.

A Tweed Fire and Rescue spokesman said the crew was called to about five fires about 2am on Sunday.

"These are nuisance fires," the spokesman said.

"It's a cost to the community. It costs $800-$1000 each time we go out.

"That comes out of the budget so it affects something down the line."

The spokesman said the fire crews treat every call out and report seriously.

"If something is set alight at two o'clock in the morning who is going to see it and report it," he said.

The spokesman said it was a regular problem and all Tweed crews have had to deal with nuisance fire.

Tweed police were called out on Sunday on reports of a real estate sign on fire.
