Crashed plane was headed from Gold Coast to Mur'bah airport

TWO men killed in a plane crash near Lismore this morning were on their way to Murwillumbah.

Police released a statement this afternoon outlining the plane had taken off from Gold Coast Airport about 8.30am (EST) and was heading to Murwillumbah airport.

"Investigations are continuing as to how the plane ended up near Lismore," the statement said.

The two male occupants had not been positively identified but are believed to be 47-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, both from the Gold Coast.

About 10.15am today a Socata Trinidad light aircraft crashed into a paddock near the Bruxner Hwy, South Gundurimba.

The plane exploded on impact with the ground and the two male occupants died at the scene.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command, crime scene officers, as well investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau remain on the scene.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
