Command centre in MP hands
TWEED residents will have to be patient to find out whether a proposed new police command centre at Marine Pde in Kingscliff will receive the go-ahead.
At a meeting held on Wednesday, the Northern Region Joint Regional Planning Panel decided to recommend refusal of the planned facility, a decision in line with recommendations made by Tweed Shire Council and councillors.
The fate of the planned command centre now rests in the hands of the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, the Hon Brad Hazzard MP who will have to choose between the opposing positions and arguments put forward by the NSW police service, Tweed Shire Council and the Kingscliff community.
Tweed Councillor Carolyn Byrne, who spoke at the meeting, said the minister's decision would be final and the community had no further recourse if the minister decided to give the go-ahead after all.
"The JRPP's decision demonstrates that people are being listened to and is a sensible determination.
"It concurs with recommendations by Tweed council and councillors, and I hope the minister will follow their suggestions.
"It would be a brave minister who decides to go against this recommendation, especially as there are other options available."
