Christmas tree tags and gifts for Valley families in need

Nicholas Falconer

THERE are just 44 sleeps left to Christmas and while for some families the planning has begun, for others things could be looking difficult.

One way to help ensure no child goes without is a donation to the Operation Santa tree in Grafton's Target store.

The project is a co-operative effort between Uniting Care and Target and all you have to do is find the big red Christmas tree in target, take a gift tag and donate a gift.

At least 2231 people in the Valley live below the poverty line, an Australian Council of Social Services report released in October states. And for families trying to not only put on Christmas dinner but also provide gifts for their children, it is a difficult time.

Unemployment in the Valley remained higher than the national average and with a tough economic year coming to a close, it was a wonderful way for the community to rally together and lift spirits.

The initiative raised 81,463 gifts and just under $150,000 in gift cards last year.
