Bushfire survival plans triggered
RESIDENTS south of Casino are being urged to enact their bushfire survival plans as a grass fire impacts on properties about 15km from the town.
Police from the Richmond Local Area command issued the precautionary warning tonight on its Facebook page, saying people in the area "should listen to the advice of firefighters on the ground and enact their Bush Fire Survival Plans".
The warning comes as firefighters continue to struggle with a grass fire on the Tathum-Ellangowan Rd, just under 15km southeast of Casino and a little over 15km west of Coraki.
The fire which started on Friday was under control until it unexpectedly jumped containment lines near Tathum-Ellangowan Rd at approximately 4.30pm today.
A Rural Fire Service spokesman said the "running fire" was partly fuelled by unfavourable weather conditions and that a helicopter had been called in to help firefighters on the ground.
The blaze is one of three currently being brought under control by firefighters on the Northern Rivers. Between Coffs Harbour and the border there are currently another 15 fires listed as "under control".
The fires come in what the Rural Fire Service had already expected would be a difficult weekend, with forecasts of high temperatures and low humidity.
A total fire an is in place across the Northern Rivers.
