CHINDERAH Tavern will show off its new refurbishment at a grand opening this weekend.

After three months of refurbishment the tavern is looking swish and is keen to celebrate with a few special events.

If you were worried about the iconic tavern losing its character and feel venue manager Scott Martin said it had not lost anything.

"There is no up-market vibe," he said.

"They spent a lot of money to maintain it, make it more spacious.

"It's got a very tradie (sic) , family friendly vibe.

"And there are larger tables for dinner."

The big deck, just a few metres from the river, is still intact and looking fabulous.

On Saturday there will be a free barbecue and face painting from 3pm.

On Sunday the famous crab races are back to amuse the kids, and of course the adults.

"We supply the mud crabs," Mr Martin said.

"If you win you get to keep your crab and get some food and drink vouchers.

"It's all very safe, we have professional handlers."

The tavern has to comply with a number of regulations when catching and using the crabs, including only racing males.

"The kids love it," he said.

You have to buy a raffle ticket to try your luck at winning a crab to compete.

Throughout the weekend bands will be rocking the tavern.

Mr Martin said if you dig old school cover bands and rock and roll you should head down and take advantage of the drink specials too.

To check it out head to156 Chinderah Bay Dr, Chinderah.
