Murwillumbah Fire Brigade captain Greg Hayes will tackle fire prevention at the open day on Saturday.

A CAT was lucky to escape a kitchen fire in Murwillumbah this morning.

Neighbours heard a fire alarm about 9.30am from a unit in McPherson St and while investigating the alarm they smelt smoke.

Murwillumbah Fire & Rescue NSW was called and on entering the unit discovered a small fire in the kitchen.

Station commander Greg Hayes said no one was home at the time but there was a cat in the premises.

"Another five minutes and the whole thing would have gone up," Mr Hayes said.

"It only just got going when we arrived."

Mr Hayes said the smoke alarm helped to prevent a more serious incident.

"It's important that people have a working smoke alarm," he said.

The cause of the unit fire was not known.
