EMERGENCY services were busy keeping car fires at bay last night.

Station office Steve Sharp said the Tweed Heads Fire and Rescue NSW crew was called to an explosion on Kirkwood Rd at 8.20pm.

"We were called to extinguish it," he said.

When the firemen arrived they found an Audi sedan completely alight.

They extinguished the blaze and soon found out the car had stolen Queensland license plates.

Tweed Police were at the scene.

On the other side of town, on Kyogle Rd near Clarrie Hall Dam, another car was set alight.

Rural Fire Service far north coast Superintendent Matt Inwood said two tankers were sent to the fire about 9pm.

"No one was in attendance with the vehicle," he said.

"It was dumped on the side of the road."

The two crews spent one hour dealing with the blaze.

The dangerous car fires come 10 days after My Daily News revealed there's been a rise in stolen cars being torched in the area.

My Daily News is awaiting comment from Tweed Police about this.
