Bycroft Cup set for shakeup
THE Bycroft Cup looks set for a shake-up after the withdrawal of a team from the competition.
Ormeau Rugby League Football Club withdrew from the A-grade competition last week after struggling to get numbers on the field.
Club president Paul Carey said administrators supported the club, which decided to leave the competition and start a rebuilding process.
"We had a few issues with injuries and people having to move to get work," Mr Carey said.
"Our senior and reserve players will be playing in the Powerguard cup.
"This affects about 50-60 players and about half a dozen administration staff."
Mr Carey said the club was not forced out but it was a decision of the club in discussion with the competition administrators.
"We will be in the rebuilding phase for the next couple of years."
Tweed Coast, Cudgen, Bilambil, Tugun, Burleigh and Currumbin rugby league clubs are also in the competition.
Bilambil Jets president Peter Rigney said the future of the Bycroft Cup was not in jeopardy with the club withdrawing from the competition.
"I wouldn't say it was a worrying sign but it is disappointing," Mr Rigney said.
"It does costs the other clubs money."
Ormeau were the competition cellar dwellers so their withdrawal will not impact this season's ladder.
The withdrawal does not affect the Ormeau Junior Rugby League Club with its more than 400 registered players.
