BURRINGBAR lad Matthew Butturini has started his campaign for Olympic gold with a thumping first match.

Butturini scored a goal and was never far from the action as the Australian men's hockey team took on South Africa overnight on day three of the 2012 London Olympics.

They defeated the team 6-0 in their first Pool A match.

Butturini's goal came just minutes before half-time when captain Jamie Dwyer passed and he deflected it into the net.

The win was the first of five pool games at Riverbank Arena for the Kookaburras.

They will now take on Spain on Wednesday.

Butturini is the Tweed's sole hope for Olympic glory.

His family flew out to be with the 25-year-old last week.
