Business calls on council help
TWEED Chamber of Commerce president Rory Curtis says Tweed Shire Council is looking at moving to boost business before local elections in September.
He said Mayor Barry Longland would like to "do something before the council closes down for election mode".
"And any assistance from the council would be appreciated.
"The council can do things such as cutting red tape.
"Small business is one of the largest combined groups in the area and we need to make it easier for them to do business."
Many solutions were discussed during a "round table forum" between councillors and business representatives, Mr Curtis said.
He joked some ideas such as "getting rid of councils altogether" and "moving the border and becoming part of Queensland" were suggested.
But he said it was premature to mention actual avenues the council was planning on following in order to help local business.
"The end result of the forum was that council needs to do more to attract new businesses.
"And where improvements can be made is to make doing business an easier process than it currently is.
"I don't know if you've ever put in a development application, but it's an arduous task for an individual.
"And there's a lot of empty shops around."
