Bus outfit stands firm on ‘near miss'
THE bus company copping criticism for its decision to change timetables for school routes has responded to news of a near miss involving primary school children near Junction Hill.
A spokeswoman for Busways, Donna Frith, said the company was responsible for the safe travel of students carried on its buses.
"We are proud of our excellent safety record achieved through a comprehensive driver training program and a meticulously maintained fleet which is continually audited by Transport for NSW and the RMS," she said.
"We also work closely with local councils and the RMS to identify suitable service routes and improve bus transport infrastructure for passengers, however ultimately it is the responsibility of par- ents to oversee the safety of their children on their journey between home and the bus stop.
"Busways undertook considerable community consultation when proposing service changes and all comments were assessed in context of the overall network and the impacts on the community as a whole.''
Ms Frith said it was not always possible to satisfy each individual issue and provide a perfect door-to-door service.
"In some cases there may need to be more parental input in order to manage safety concerns around the travel of students to and from the bus stop."
