Bra Boy jailed for police assault
BRA Boy Jai Abberton has been sentenced to 15 months jail with a non-parole period of nine months for assaulting Byron Bay police officers in March.
Abberton, 39, from Maroubra, was not at Tweed Heads Local Court today to hear the sentencing and was unlikely to be released until April 9, 2013.
The Bra Boy gang member went into the Byron Bay Police Station on March 3 telling officers on duty that he had "f***** up" before becoming violent and damaging equipment.
When police officers attempted to restrain Abberton, he then assaulted two police officers.
Abberton was convicted of assaulting police and causing grievous bodily harm.
In a separate incident, Abberton was also sentenced to six months prison, to be served concurrently, for being in custody of a knife in a public place.
In February last year, he went into Maroubra Police Station holding a kitchen knife.
Police demanded that he drop the knife but they were forced to draw their firearms before Abberton put the knife on the front counter.
In sentencing Magistrate Dakin said the evidence does "support the conclusion that the defendant does suffer from a psychotic illness."
"I'm unable to conclude that his behaviour is attributed to his mental illness," Magistrate Dakin said.
Magistrate Dakin said the defendant's actions were indistinguishable from his use of illicit drugs and he required further rehabilitation.
