JIM Maynard is not the kind of man to be held back from achieving his goals.

Or from having some fun.

But at 60 years-old the keen Tweed Heads bowler had a nasty fall and needed a knee replacement.

This compounded with rheumatoid arthritis threatened his bowling career and his mobility.

With emphysema to boot, anyone else would give up in despair.

But not Jim.

Instead he came up with a state-of-the-art wheelchair that would allow him to keep bowling.

But he still had to push it.

He now has a new-fangled motorised chair that almost clocks up 30 km and hour.

"It's souped up and ready to go," he said.

"I don't need to go that fast, but it's nice to know that it can go at that speed."

"I'm literally cruising through life now."
