Bowlers chase singles title and $11,000 prize money

AFTER some of the nation's best bowlers assembled for the Summerland Series Pairs, another all-star field will arrive in Ballina for the 2013 singles worth $11,000.

Many headline bowlers will compete with participants coming from the length of the eastern seaboard to compete.

Georgia White received plenty of interest as the first female player to compete in the pairs when she teamed up with Shannon Gittoes.

The Australian under-25 representative is back for the singles and will compete in section D tomorrow against David Zoro, Keith Farelly and Paul Clarke.

Section A features NSW representative Nathan Wise up against Brett Dean, Max Jaffray and Steve Johnson while national team member Nathan Rice (Helensvale) is in section B.

Former Ballina bowler Aaron Teys, now at the Warilla club, will face some stiff competition in section F.

He meets John Hrabak, Lees Rootsey and Paul O'Brien.

Ballina's own Kris Lehfeldt will compete in section P on Saturday against Anthony Quail, Luke Edmunds and Bruce McNish.

Brett Wilkie, who won the Summerland Series pairs with Lehfeldt, is out of the singles tournament.

Wilkie and Lehfeldt defeated Walter James and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow 22-8 in the pairs final last Sunday.

Wynnum Manly bowler and last year's Queensland singles champion Jamie Smith takes on Ben McCall, Reece Wilson and Viv Ross in section M.

Ballina men's bowling club president Frank Dodd said it was an open field of 64 that would contest the three-day event at the Cherry St Ballina Bowling and Recreation Club.

Dodd said while Wise, Rice, White, Lehfeldt and Smith shaped up as great chances, he knew many bowlers could threaten for the crown.

"We know it could be very even," Dodd said.

"Whether they are well-known bowlers or not so well-known, there is little between most bowlers in the field."

Play in sections A to H will commence from 9am tomorrow with the other eight sections (J to S) to be contested on Saturday.
