Bones were all that was left of body found in tent

POLICE have confirmed all that was left of a body found in a tent at Wooyung Nature Reserve this month was bones.

Mystery still surrounds the identity of the remains, which were discovered after a bushwalker stumbled upon them.

"We're still to confirm the identity," Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Acting Inspector Saul Wiseman said.

"We believe it is a male and he was found with property.

"We have to follow that line of inquiry to see if we have any DNA on file when the remains are examined."

Police are unsure if the deceased was homeless, but Insp Wiseman said the death was not considered to be suspicious.

"The remains are in the significantly advanced stage of decomposition," he said.

There is still no cause of death.

A police statement said a man was walking through the Wooyung Nature Reserve on the Tweed Coast Rd when he noticed a tent which had been in the same location a week earlier.

"He went to investigate and found a body inside the tent; he then alerted police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command who initiated an investigation," the statement said.
