Battling cancer with zumba and plenty of pink
THE power of pink was evident at Cabarita on the weekend when zumba instructor Belen Fuller held an evening of fun and food to raise funds for cancer research.
Ms Fuller has many class members who have battled with or are still battling cancer.
There were raffles, videos, fun cakes and lots and lots of pink, when both men and women donned the colour in support of the event.
The function room at Cabarita Beach Resort Hotel was packed to the rafters.
Breast cancer survivor Irene Strong has lived up to her name, battling breast cancer.
"I pretty much went through hell," she said.
"I had cancer diagnosed in one breast and had radiotherapy.
"I thought that was it, but six months later cancer was detected in the other breast.
"It was a pretty awful experience, but I was one of the lucky ones.
"I also had a strong support network from my colleagues at Tweed Hospital.
"As a hospital worker, I got to see life on the other side.
"It helps to understand how patients feel."
Ms Strong had five lots of surgery all up.
"I feel really great now," she said.
"I'm determined to stay that way."
