Batten down the hatches: more floods may be on the way

METEOROLOGISTS are predicting more floods for the Tweed if rain continues to blanket the area.

Weatherzone forecasters are predicting more than 200mm of rain will fall across some areas in the next day or two.

"There could be heavy rain for a couple of days. Overnight will be the wettest period and there should be some easing late tomorrow afternoon," a Weatherzone meteorologist said.

"There's a good chance of getting well over 100ml in the next 24 hours due to the troph degenerating into a low pressure system.

"Some parts of the Tweed will have gained more than 200mm. There is absolutely a chance of localised flooding, but the flooding wont just be in and around the rivers, it will also be around the roads."

The meteorologist said that despite lower rainfall than average this month, the continuous rain means catchments will struggle to cope with any more wet weather

"It's often that one flood event is backed up by another one. I wouldn't say it's unusual when the conditions are perfect for a lot of rain," he said.

The meteorologist warned that beaches are expected to be thrashed by heavy winds and large swells.

"There will be quite a lot of strong wind and swells. And there'll be some coastal erosion," he said.

"Staying clear of the beach in the next few days is the smart thing to do."

Meanwhile, Richmond-Tweed SES are gearing up and ready to go if conditions continue to deteriorate.

Richmond-Tweed SES acting region controller Kaylene Jones said that the Bureau of Meteorology hadn't issued a warning for NSW yet, but Queensland had been issued with a severe weather warning.

"Currently we're planning for it at the moment. Doing our prep work in anticipation," she said.

Ms Jones said that her staff were worn out from last month's floods, but would be there to help if needed.

"I know there's some tired workers here. But we're always ready to go," she said.
