Barrel frenzy blesses the Bay

DEPENDING on your perspective, we either got lucky or unlucky with that last storm.

From the layman's view, it was a total bummer: destructive winds, flooding and more blackouts.

From our perspective, however, we had a stroke of luck.

It started off close to the coast, producing short-period and very messy swell.

But overnight it motored out to sea in a big loop around the Byron coast before swinging back in to cross the coast further south.

The end result was three days of offshore, cleaner waves.

This produced a barrel frenzy the likes of which we have not seen for several months.

And didn't the local crew just love it?

Sadly by the weekend, the flipside of the storm had left us with howling onshore winds and more large and lumpy short-period swell that quickly faded as the wind shifted into what appears to be a never-ending north-easterly onshore trend.

I suppose every silver lining has its cloud.

Remember to have fun, wait your turn, and surf today like you want to surf again tomorrow.
