THE search for excellence at Banora Point High School reaches beyond the academic endeavours of its students and includes the sporting prowess of the kids.

Every year, the school selects 21 of its most gifted and talented kids from years 7 to 10 and trains them to become the best they can be in their chosen sport.

Today, the school put the spotlight on its young sports stars and gave its students the opportunity to marvel at the achievements of their fellow pointers at a special assembly.

Creator and coordinator of the excellence program Phil Whitehead said the school offered the 21 selected students a comprehensive sports program which included instructions from professional athletes such as golf's Rachel Hetherington, football's Gold Coast's Titans and soccer's Gold Coast United.

"It's great to be involved with such a bunch of talented kids and encourage and train them to reach their personal bests.

"The kids are all really motivated and teach and mentor their fellow students.

"It's very gratifying to form a close bond with these talented kids," Mr Whitehead said.

Mr Whitehead retired from the program this year and new PE teacher Nathan Williams has taken over the reins.

"We do something different with the kids every week.

"Today, for instance, we are expecting a visit from the Gold Coast's gridiron team, the Stingrays.

"We teach the students about mainstream sports but like to introduce them to a wide range," Mr Williams said.

Upcoming soccer star and cross country runner James McCann said he really loved being involved in the program and the opportunity it gave him to play his sports and become an all-round athlete.

"When I was in primary school I competed in the school carnivals and did really well.

"I joined Banora Point Soccer Club and really enjoyed playing.

"Because of the program we get to mix with sportspeople from different sports and meet some famous professional athletes.

"The program offers some really enjoyable experiences such as tours of Metricon Stadium and Skilled Park, James said.

The program goes beyond sports and aims to teach kids about respect and how to overcome personal challenges.

"I aim to be a positive role model, in school and out, James said.
