IT'S back - the annual Tweed Valley Banana Festival will return next week.

Banana Jim, the familiar mascot of the festival, was out and about yesterday promoting the event.

The festival will kick off on Tuesday with the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts Concert.

The concert will have special significance this year after the death this week of a patron and former president of the performance arts festival, Arthur Holmes.

This year's banana festival includes the 21st Annual Rotary Club of Murwillumbah Art Exhibition at Jesse McMillan Hall.

For the first time a $500 prize will be given to the artists whose work is judged best in show.

The event culminates with the street parade from the Murwillumbah Showgrounds to Knox Park on August 25.

Other events include:

August 17 - Banana Festival Fashion Parade 6.30pm-8.30pm at Murwillumbah Civic Centre.

August 18 - Harvest Week Church Service 5pm-6.30pm at All Saints Anglican Church.

August 25 - Family Fun Day 1pm-4.30pm at Knox Park.
