Assault victim calls for CCTV

A 20-YEAR-OLD man has spoken out after being assaulted in the main street of Byron Bay.

Robert Docking, an auto electrician, suffered a fractured jaw when he was hit from behind out the front of Why Not restaurant in Jonson St at 3.30am on Sunday, October 21.

Mr Docking, who had to have two metal plates inserted in his jaw, said the attack was completely unprovoked and that he hadn't even seen the perpetrator.

"It was a dog act," he said.

Mr Docking said he was shocked when he was told that he was just one of 12 Byron assault victims also being treated at the hospital

"One (Byron) guy in there had two broken eye-sockets and his jaw wired together," he said.

Mr Docking said CCTV couldn't be introduced soon enough to the town.

In February Byron was rated the fourth-worst area for alcohol-related violence after Sydney CBD, Kings Cross and Newcastle. There were 225 alcohol-related assaults at Byron Bay in the 12 months to March 2012, 190 of them on Jonson St.

A majority of Byron councillors have voted to give in-principle support to CCTV.

Police want to speak to a man of Caucasian appearance who they believe may be able to help with their inquiries. He was about 20, 178cm tall, with a slim build, and wearing jeans, a shirt, and a red and blue baseball cap worn backwards at the time.
