A SOLO show of works by Seabastion Toast will be displayed at the D'Bar Gallery until April 30, where the artist will exhibit paintings of horses, sheep, deer, crows and owls.

The "Of Hoof and Claw" exhibition is a play on the idea of fighting tooth and nail and also encompasses the idea of using the taxonomy of feet to represent the subjects.

Taking part in several exhibitions and winning various awards including the $10,000 Gainsborough Greens Art Prize on the Gold Coast, the artist said she liked things raw, awkward and gritty.

"These works are an exploration into animal archetypes and the relationships humans have with animals and their environments," she said.

"With a fairly modernist approach to the paint I was interested in expressing the essence of the subject ... the poetic weight of the pose and composition becomes very important as a subtle shift of stature or tilt of head imbues the subject with a loaded narrative.

"Much of my source imagery includes animals in either flight or fight as I sought to capture the movement and energy of the beast while reflecting on its ephemeral presence," Ms Toast said.

She is a multidisciplinary artist committed to a full-time art practice on the Gold Coast.

The "Of Hoof and Claw" exhibition will be open to the public everyday between 6pm-9pm at the D'Bar Gallery, Duranbah.
