People urged to keep look out for arsonists this summer

THE NSW Police Force, the Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW are today urging the community to keep a lookout for bushfire arsonists this summer.

More than 35% of bushfires are believed to be the result of arson, with numerous others being accidental or the result of neglect.

Strike Force Tronto, led by detectives from the Property Crime Squad's Arson Unit, is again co-ordinating the investigative response to deliberately-lit bushfires, and will work closely with local police and investigators from the Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW.

Thirty-two people have already been charged in relation to deliberate bushfires since October this year, including 20 juveniles.
