THE New South Wales Government is considering a $30 million tourist park for Tweed Heads South.
River Heights Tourist Park is a 355-unit complex proposed for Firetail Ct between Fraser Dr and the Pacific Hwy.
According to plans submitted to Tweed Shire Council in August, Proportional Property Investment was proposing the development. The tourist park would include 193 one-bedroom units and 164 two-bedroom units on land between Fraser Dr and the Pacific Hwy.
"There is a significant lack of 'cabin' type accommodation in the area suitable for family groups," Darryl Anderson Consulting stated in an economic impact report on the development.
"It is our opinion that the proposal achieves a sound balance between the site's opportunities and constraints and substantially complies with all relevant statutory and strategic planning policies and guidelines."
Tweed Shire Mayor Barry Longland said any investment into the Tweed needed to be encouraged provided it met the planning codes. "Any sort of investment in the shire at the moment is important," Cr Longland said.
"This is something that is going to the JRPP (Joint Regional Planning Panel).
"If it's a development that fits the category then I welcome it."
Cr Longland said this development could take advantage of the Kirkwood Rd interchange onto the Pacific Hwy that the Tweed Shire Council was constructing.
"(The traffic issues on Fraser Drive) will be part of the assessment on this application," he said.
Proportional Property Investment was unavailable for comment on the application.
