A STATE Government planning panel has deferred the decision of a $30 million tourist park for Tweed Heads South despite calls for refusal.

The decision of the Joint Regional Planning Panel to defer was to give time for the application to prepare a cultural heritage assessment.

The development is for a 355-unit tourist park is at Firetail St, Tweed Heads South.

Tweed Shire Council has recommended that the application be refused because it was contrary to the environment plan and was not to be considered in the public's interest.

"The proposed tourist accommodation development is considered to create an unacceptable level of impact with particular regard to cultural heritage, land forming, flora and fauna, noise and visual amenity," the council report stated.

"Given that the subject site is not considered to be suitable for such a large scale tourist accommodation development, the proposal is not supported and is therefore recommended for refusal."
