BRIANNA Jacobsen spent three hours chasing two thieves who broke into a friend's family business in Rockhampton and stole replica guns and swords.

Brianna and pal Jeremy Harmsworth were driving in East St at 11.30pm on Monday when they saw two 17-year-old males banging their fists on the Capricorn Model House.

About 45 minutes earlier, the two youths had allegedly used a bollard, still set in concrete, to smash a window and make a quick grab of collectable weapons, including four katana swords and a replica James Bond gun.

"They had come back to the shop and saw the owner inside so they started banging their fists and waving like it was a big joke," said Brianna.

She and Jeremy chased the thieves before they saw a police car, which also joined in the hunt.

After a three-hour chase in South Rockhampton, Brianna found the pair near the Rockhampton Regional Council Library and cut them off with her car.

"After we had spotted them at the shop we knew what they looked like.

"We drove everywhere to try and find them.

"We finally caught up with them. There are even black tyre marks showing where we had cut them off."

The pair were arrested about 2.30am and appeared in court yesterday afternoon charged with theft and damage to property.

The items were recovered and returned to the family.

Yesterday, instead of owner Gordon Davey celebrating his 66th birthday, he and his family were left to nail up wooden boards at the front of their shop and clear two boxes of smashed glass.

"He got a good birthday present," wife June said.

His son Shane said authorities ought to consider reinstating security guards in East St to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.

He described such offenders as not fully rehabilitated and likely to be back out on the streets wreaking havoc.

"When they had security guards patrolling the mall, there was hardly any criminal activity," said Shane.

"I wonder if the CCTV cameras that were put up actually work."
