THE council’s decision to call for a suspension of all coal-seam gas exploration on the Tweed reflected the area’s values, according to Mayor Kevin Skinner.
Tweed Shire Council this week joined Lismore and Kyogle councils, NOROC, Rous Water and the NSW Farmers Federation in calling for a moratorium on the controversial industry.
Cr Skinner said he and his fellow councillors stood united in their concerns about the industry and its potential effects on the Tweed’s environment.
“This has been a difficult issue for council as there has been extensive negative publicity about CSG but limited information available to make an informed assessment,” Cr Skinner said.
“However, based on an initial assessment by council officers and our own consultation with the community and relevant parties, it is clear this is not an industry we would welcome to the Tweed.
“We value our environment, our farms and our water quality and we would not be prepared to risk what we hold so dear to benefit gas company profits.”
Councillors voted unanimously for the moratorium on Tuesday night.
Council will forward a copy of a council report to the Department of Primary Industries, the authority which is currently assessing an application in the west of the shire, and ask them to oppose the issue of a licence.
“The Tweed community has serious concerns over the prospect of the Green Cauldron being utilised for CSG and production because of the lack of clear and understandable advice and information of the technology and its impacts on the environment, the amenity, landholders and water quality,” the report said.
The report will also be forwarded to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure.
Council’s decision was welcomed by the Northern Rivers Guardians and the Tweed Combined Rural Industries.
