Call made to lower speed limits

THE monthly meeting of the Tumbulgum Community Association will be held tonight, with speed and fatalities on Tweed Valley Way high on the agenda.

Concerned Tweed Valley Way resident David Stringer wrote to Tweed Shire Council a month ago to highlight the hazards of the winding road.

His concerns follow the death of a Murwillumbah woman in a fatal three-person accident on August 19 near Stott's Island.

“There are at least half a dozen crosses on the road, which speaks for itself, and I think dropping the speed limit from the present 100kmh to 70kmh in certain sections would be the best course of action,” Mr Stringer said.

“Parts of the road where it is a single-lane carriage way should have a lower speed limit, and this would help in bad weather conditions.”

A Tweed Shire Council spokesperson said council had applied for Federal Government black spot funding.

“As a result of a road safety review of Tweed Valley Way last financial year, council carried out significant new road works on Tweed Valley Way which included 70kmh repeater signs installed from Cane Road to Quarry Road. While council cannot comment on individual crashes, in general it is considered that if drivers observe the posted speed limit and drive to the prevailing conditions, crashes on Tweed Valley Way would be significantly reduced.”

The meeting will be held in the Tumbulgum Community Hall at 7pm.
