POLICE have warned young men not to live like they're playing a video game, after a 20-year-old driver slammed into a power pole so hard his car was sliced in two.
The P-plate driver and his 19-year-old passenger were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the car hit the pole on King Georges Road in South Hurstville just after midnight.
A 19-year-old friend of the injured pair was driving next to them at the time of the accident.
Superintendent Brad Shepherd said the car was almost certainly speeding but it was too early to say if it was street racing.
"We haven't had a chance to speak to the young men. They're in hospital at the moment," he told reporters on Monday.
"We have had early conversations with (the friend)... but until we speak to the two young men it's a little too early to determine exactly the cause of the accident.
"I'll make it clear that if it was drag racing, we'll be using all our legal powers to take the necessary action that we need to."
The driver has suffered a compound fracture to his leg, and the other man has a suspected broken pelvis.
Both men were being operated on at St George Hospital on Monday.
Superintendent Shepherd said young men should realise that risky behaviour can be fatal.
"I say to young males, think about their driving behaviour. This is not a video game - in a video game you get two or three chances," he said.
"These men are lucky, but many young men don't get that second chance."
Police say they plan to concentrate more attention on King Georges Road, which is notorious for fatalities and risky driving.
