Severe winds ground houseboats

STRONG winds caused two houseboats to run aground in the Tweed River overnight on Saturday.

As severe weather battered the state yesterday, the Tweed coast took the brunt of up to 25 knot winds.

Two houseboats moored in the Tweed River near Boyds Bay Bridge were left stranded by the tide yesterday morning.

Boyds Bay Houseboat Holidays owner Peter Day said fortunately everyone onboard the Island Dream houseboat was okay.

Mr Day said the houseboat was undamaged.

“We just have to wait for high tide. It’ll come back out.”

A large private houseboat was also stranded by the tide on a nearby sandbank.

“It’s been pretty terrible this morning (Sunday),” Mr Malligan said.

“It’s a very ugly-looking sloppy sea. It’s not very nice out there.”

The Bureau of Meteorology yesterday cancelled its coastal waters strong wind warning for the Northern NSW coastline.

Today’s forecast was for patchy rain early in the morning and winds south-westerly and light tending north-east to north-westerly up to 20 h around noon.

Tomorrow and Wednesday you can expect areas of fog early in the morning, isolated showers and winds averaging 10 to 20kmh.
