THE final count in the federal election can be expected within three weeks, the electoral commission says.

At noon on Monday, 91.92 per cent of the House of Representatives vote had been counted, with the Senate count slightly behind on 87.3 per cent.

But so far only nine lower house seats have been officially declared out of 150.

One seat, Victoria's Corangamite, has slipped back into the Australian Electoral Commission's close seats category because the margin between Liberal and Labor remained narrower than the number of votes left to count.

But Labor's Darren Cheeseman claimed victory in the seat on August 31.

AEC spokesman Phil Diak said no date had been set for the final numbers - known as the return of the writ.

"We can't give you an exact date, but in the last two elections it's taken about a month from election day for all writs to be returned," he told AAP.

The writs for the Senate will be returned state by state.
