Golden boys: Andrew Butturini celebrates with members of Australia’s junior boy’s hockey team after its victory over Pakistan during the final boy’s hockey gold medal match of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympics Games.
THREE Tweed hockey boys have a lot to celebrate after snagging gold at the Youth Olympics.
Murwillumbah's Dylan Wotherspoon and Jake Farrell, and Burringbar's Andrew Butturini, assisted in the junior men's hockey team gold-medal win in the final against Pakistan at the recently held Youth Olympics in Singapore.
Australia defeated Pakistan 2-1, coming from behind in the match and keeping the team undefeated throughout the competition.
Andrew, who has been playing hockey for 12 years and was goalkeeper in the final match, said winning was a good feeling.
“It was great,” he said.
Dylan said it was a hard final match, but the result was everything the team had hoped for.
“I was pretty stoked,” he said.
“It was like a dream come true.”
After missing the game before the final because of a suspension, Dylan said he would put everything he could into the final.
The 16-year-old proved that to be true after a backhand strike, which led to the equalising goal for Australia, making the score one-all.
“I told them over the last couple of days that for sitting out I would pay it back out on the corner,” Dylan said. “I stuck with it and scored. It was great.”
Australian junior hockey captain Daniel Beale said the team was more than happy with the result.
“We came here for the gold and that's what we got,” he said.
“This is what we dreamed of, what we play hockey for, so for it to come true – words can not describe it.”
