IT is time for Tweed residents to pack away their winter coats and embrace the start of spring.

The winter season officially came to an end on Tuesday after brief periods of unseasonably cool weather throughout the Tweed region.

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Shannon Symons said towns across the State were affected by the winter weather.

“This has been the coldest weather New South Wales has seen since 1998 in terms of daytime temperatures,” Ms Symons said.

“The lowest temperature the Tweed region reached was 3.8 on June 12 and the warmest temperature recorded was 27.1 on August 19.”

Ms Symons said there were some variations to the winter weather in comparison with past years.

“There were slightly warmer-than-average nights and slightly cooler-than-average days on the Tweed,” Ms Symons said.

“The average maximum daytime temperature was quite varied, and the lowest temperature reached was 3.8 on June 12.”

During winter, Tweed Heads experienced the highest rainfall in New South Wales on July 27 when 74.6mm of rain fell within a 24-hour period.

Despite this peak in the rainfall, Ms Symons said not many large quantities of rain were recorded in the Tweed region during winter.

“In terms of rainfall for the Tweed region, an average amount was measured,” she said.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the first week of spring on the Tweed will be warm.

Clear and sunny days are expected with a few showers and the maximum temperature expected to be 25.
