POWDERFINGER will signal the beginning of the end when their final tour of Australia opens in Newcastle.
The Brisbane rockers kick off their 35-date Sunsets Farewells tour on Wednesday night promising to say goodbye to thousands of fans with a selection of greatest hits from their 20-year career.
The band say they have settled on a core of 20 songs which will comprise the bulk of the tour.
"The songs are the things that people really attached themselves to strongly, emotionally," singer Bernard Fanning told AAP earlier this week.
"People are able to write themselves into the songs. They can be singing the song and thinking they're the author. You can get people to feel their own sense of euphoria or complete devastation. That's the key."
Powderfinger will be supported by Jet and The Vines during the Sunsets tour, which will come to a close in Brisbane on November 13.
The five piece, consisting also of Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins and Jon Coghill, announced they would be calling it a day in April.
Recording seven albums since forming in 1989, Powderfinger rose to become Australia's most celebrated, successful and influential rock act of the past two decades.
Powderfinger play Newcastle Entertainment Centre tonight (Wednesday).
