Suns edge out Tigers after scare

GOLD Coast Suns gave their home fans a farewell to remember with a thrilling one-point victory over the Werribee Tigers in their VFL showdown at Southport on Saturday.

In a match reminiscent of their round three encounter, when Gold Coast led by seven goals only for Werribee to storm home in the second half to snatch a draw, the Suns were forced to dig deep against a fast-finishing Tigers.

The Suns led by five goals at halftime but then had to withstand another Werribee fightback to secure their fifth win of the season, climbing to 10th on the VFL ladder.

After a tight first quarter, the Suns kicked six goals to one in the second term to break clear.

Werribee fought back in the third term, kicking six goals to two to set up a tense last quarter but the Suns held on in a thriller.

Daniel Harris was outstanding for the home side with Sam Isles, Brandon Matera, Charlie Dixon, Joey Daye and Alik Magin also impressing. Matera kicked four goals for the Suns while Jack Stanlake chipped in with two majors.

Although the finals are beyond them, the Suns will be hoping to finish their season on a high when they head south to Victoria Park on Saturday to take on Collingwood.

The Magpies edged out the Suns by 20 points in their meeting earlier in the year but the Gold Coast outfit has shown good signs since then.

The match also presents the Gold Coast’s uncontracted players with a chance to push their cases for inclusion in the squad for the Suns’ AFL debut next year.
