TWO Tweed junior cricketers will slog it out in Sydney for a spot in the NSW state side after impressing the selectors of the Far North Coast state cricket team.

Zachary Merrion and Connor Ziebell, both 11 years old, were selected for the FNC under-12 state side after shining in wet conditions at Coffs Harbour earlier this month against Mid North Coast.

Playing for the FNC district side – considered a level under the state team of the same name – Zachary, from Pottsville Cricket Club, wowed selectors with his ability to wear bowlers down with resilient batting.

He valued his wicket and his team valued his vital runs.

Connor, from Cudgen Cricket Club, was also impressive with the bat, though in a more David Warner fashion, attacking every ball that deserved it and smashing his way to 26 runs off just 21 balls.

Connor’s fielding was equally strong.

However with the cricket season coming to a close, the boys won’t get to pit their skills against the best in the state until November when the Public Schools Sports Association carnival hits Sydney.

The talented twosome also played for the South-East Queensland representative side earlier in the season and so may have a shot at the Queensland side should things not work out with NSW.
