Like ducks to water

Tweed Heads Public School senior students are rapt in learning how to surf on Friday afternoons in school time.

ACCORDING to their principal Jacquie McAllum, Tweed Heads Public School students can’t get enough of their new Friday afternoon surf sessions.

Taking advantage of the wonderful natural resource right at the school’s doorstep, surfing lessons are included in the school’s summer physical education curriculum.

The senior Year five and six students head to the beach each week to learn how to conquer the ocean at Jamoe Borthwick’s Walkin’ On Water Surf School.

The Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore wannabes take part in a comprehensive 10-week program covering water and surf safety, and surf etiquette with qualified instructors.

“The end-of-the-school week can’t come quickly enough for the students who take the surf program,” McAllum said.

“With the skills they learn from this program they are able to enjoy the surf with confidence.

“Who knows what the future may hold for these students?

“There could be a future surf champion being nurtured here at Tweed Heads Public School.”

The pupils will be dropping in as usual again on Friday.

Today though, many of them will partake in the National Ride2School event for the first time.

McAllum and other teachers are escorting a group of children on their bikes as they ride from Keith Compton Drive along the waterway to the school in Bay Street, with a breakfast available at school when they arrive.

The ride begins at 8am.
