Sammy on course to help kids read

SAMMY the dog is a keen listener.

The retired racing greyhound began his new volunteer work at Kingscliff Public School yesterday – helping children to read.

The Cabarita Beach dog and his owner, Babette Angell, will lend a helping paw every week through the Story Dogs program, which helps children with their literacy skills by letting them read to man’s best friend.

Year 2 student Isaak Sicirac buffed up his skills yesterday by reading picture book Down the Well to the curious pet.

Ms Angell said they would donate time every week to the school.

“Sammy has always been good with children, and I like to help students out with their education,” Ms Angell said.

“Plus he has always been a good listener.”

Ms Angell, who also volunteers with Tweed Heads-based Friends of the Hound, said having Sammy in the school also helped promote retired racing greyhounds as pets.

“People seem to think they’re violent or bad around children, but they’re not. Sammy is so calm,” she said.

Story Dogs began in Murwillumbah six months ago.

Murwillumbah and Murwillumbah East public schools are already on board with Centaur, Uki and Stokers Siding public schools on the waiting list to start next school term.

Co-founder Leah Sheldon said demand was increasing.

“Story Dogs works so well because it’s fun, non-judgemental, helps to improve children’s focus, increases literacy skills and, most importantly, it builds confidence with the young readers.”

Before heading to school, all dogs must pass an accreditation test and be regularly groomed by veterinarians.
