Tweed escapes the worst of rain

EXPECTED heavy rain across the Tweed failed to eventuate yesterday with the weather bureau predicting an easing of the showers.

By 3pm yesterday the heaviest rainfalls for the previous 24 hours were at Boat harbour north of Murwillumbah (66mm), Tomewin on the Queensland border (57mm), Bald Mountain behind Chillingham and Duranbah (54mm) and Murwillumbah (53mm) but the steady falls easily flowed away.

Murwillumbah SES controller Chris Chrisostomos said his organisation had not been put on any flood alert, but had responded to one call-out in the early hours of Tuesday morning to remove a fallen tree.

The tree had blocked a driveway at Cudgera Creek delaying a woman from driving a person to the Gold Coast airport.

Tweed schools remained open despite concerns rainfall would increase.

Crabbes Creek and Burringbar Public primary schools however reported that some students, including several who lived along Sleepy Hollow Road at Sleepy Hollow, were unable to get to school because of early flash flooding.

Tweed Shire Council reported no roads closed and the newly launched myroadinfor.com.au website promoted by the council last week showed no flood.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts scattered showers today. Weatherzone.com.au said the weather would improve today as a new low off Fraser Island moves offshore.

FORECAST

Tweed’s weather is tipped to improve today as the Fraser Island low pressure system moves offshore.

So-called “landphoon” is expected to weaken over the inland.

Tweed’s back-up water supply, the Clarrie Hall Dam, continues to overflow.
