A SEVERE thunderstorm is expected to hit Coolangatta and Tweed Heads about 3.30pm DST.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for residents of Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redlands as well as parts of the Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, Scenic Rim and Somerset council areas.
The bureau warns that heavy rain and flash flooding are likely. The storms are moving to the south-east.
Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through floodwaters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
