MORE rain is expected today before a couple of days of sunshine, according to forecasts.

There was little rain on the Tweed in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, with 19mm being the highest recorded in the region at Tweed Heads.

Apart from a heavy shower late yesterday morning, there was little rain during the day despite the overcast conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has predicted a mostly fine day today, with isolated showers that will continue tomorrow.

The weather is predicted to clear for Friday and Saturday, but there is a chance of thunderstorms and heavy rain on Sunday.

Murwillumbah has already recorded well above its mean February rainfall this year.

With 263mm falling in the first nine days, it has already beaten the mean of 233.4mm, but there is still a way to go to beat the highest-ever rainfall for February of 645.6mm set in 1978.

Agata Imielska, of BOM’s New South Wales Climate Services Centre said the rainfall experienced since Saturday night was nowhere near a record-breaking about.

She said Murwillumbah received 119.6mm within 24 hours in February last year, not far off the 178mm recorded on Saturday night.

And in January 2008, 198mm fell within 24 hours.

“What happened on the weekend was still significant rainfall, but record-wise, it was nothing unusual,” Ms Imielska said.
