FLOODWATERS are being closely monitored across the Tweed by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), after hundreds of millimetres of rain fell across the region on Saturday night.

Isolated thunderstorms and rain were expected to continue last night, with scattered showers expected today.

The BOM continued its severe weather warning for flash flooding on the Tweed River at 4.13pm yesterday afternoon as the water dropped from its 6am peak, which reached just below the minor flood level.

“Heavy falls and flash flooding are still occurring downstream of Murwillumbah but this should not aggravate main river flooding,” the BOM reported in an earlier minor flood warning.

“Rain periods and isolated thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls are forecast for the next 24 hours and the situation is being closely monitored.”

BOM forecaster David Grant said showers and isolated thunderstorms were expected to continue, but rainfall in the district was on a decreasing trend.

Limpinwood recorded the highest rainfall on Saturday night, with 307mm falling in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday and another 20mm fell to 3pm.

Boatharbour (222mm), Clarrie Hall Dam (243mm), Eungella (222mm) and Uki (212mm) all broke the 200mm barrier.

Barneys Point recorded the lowest rainfall overnight, with 89mm falling until 9am.

Tweed Daily News rain recorder Trevor Thomson said Chillingham, which was one area cut off by floods on Sunday morning, received 287mm in the 48 hours to 3pm yesterday.

“It stormed all night, it was a moderate flood out here,” Mr Thomson said yesterday.

He said his property resembled a car yard, as neighbours took advantage of his elevated position to store their cars away from floodwater.

Ray Duke, of Dunroby, said he received 92mm in the 24 hours to 3pm yesterday.
